Machete Caves: The Magic Beneath Polo Beach

After diving my way around the Caribbean, I’ve learned that the dives you remember aren’t always the deepest, clearest, or filled with the biggest animals. Sometimes, it’s the feeling of a place that stays with you. Machete Caves at Polo Beach, on Isla Bastimentos, is one of those dives.

From the surface, Polo Beach looks like the kind of remote Caribbean paradise you could easily spend the whole day exploring. But beneath the water is an entirely different world. The limestone coastline disappears into a maze of tunnels, caverns, cracks, and swim-throughs, with shafts of sunlight cutting through the darkness. The maximum depth is only around 40 feet, but depth is hardly the point here.

As you move through the caves, the dive becomes almost dreamlike. One moment you’re swimming beneath the open Caribbean, surrounded by blue water and sunlight; the next, you’re slipping into a shadowy passage where beams of light reveal glassy sweepers and occasional nurse sharks resting in the sandy crevasses.

What makes Machete Caves so special to me is that it doesn’t feel like a typical Caribbean reef dive. I’ve seen beautiful coral gardens throughout the Caribbean, dramatic walls, wrecks, pinnacles, and encounters with large pelagics. But there is something completely different about navigating through these ancient rock formations while beams of tropical sunlight flicker across the walls around you.

It feels less like visiting a dive site and more like discovering a secret place that the ocean has been hiding.

And that’s the magic of Machete Caves. It’s not about how deep you go or how many species you can check off your list. It’s about the atmosphere—the silence, the changing light, the feeling of moving through a natural underwater labyrinth, and that little rush of excitement when you turn a corner and have no idea what’s waiting on the other side.

For an experienced diver who has explored much of the Caribbean, Machete Caves is exactly the kind of dive that reminds you why you fell in love with diving in the first place.
